When PS4 firmware update 8.00 was released earlier this week, users became privy to the fact you could record voice chat, leading some to believe this provided Sony with the ability to monitor conversations. In a blog post, Sony explained this is not the case at all, as the feature is for only PlayStation owners, allowing them to record voice chat for moderation purposes. Sony apologized for not clearly communicating the new feature and explained why it was introducing it....

The Sunset Overdrive trademark was filed by Sony on April 26, according to US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) documents. Insomniac Games owns the IP, and the game was an Xbox One exclusive when it was released in October 2014, before the game was eventually released on PC in 2018. It’s still available through Xbox Game Pass for PC, going by the listing on Microsoft’s XBGP website, which makes sense because Microsoft is the publisher....

As part of today’s Q3 earnings reveal, where Sony announced 4.5 million sales for PS5, the platform holder also announced sales figures for Spider-Man: Miles Morales. The game, which launched alongside the PS5 in November, has so far sold 4.1 million copies to consumers as of December 31, 2020. The number includes PS4 and PS5 copies, both digitally and at retail. This is a decent turnout for a smaller-scale expansion, but it is nowhere near the mega-hit that is its predecessor, Spider-Man....

According to the company, it is currently experiencing an attack by a third party attempting to gain access to the Square Enix Account Management System. They are doing this by using a combination of email addresses and passwords possibly obtained from “online services of other companies." Square advises against using the same email address and password combination for your Square Enix account as you do for other online services, as it increases the possibility of a third party gaining unauthorized access to your account....

The Marvel’s Avengers beta technically doesn’t go live until later today, but servers are already up for some on PC, PS4 and Xbox One. Unfortunately, what many didn’t count on was having to create a Square Enix account to be able to play. Needless to say, there are so many all trying to get an account at the same time. The fact the Avengers beta is free for everyone on PS4 this weekend also doesn’t help....

Should you one day decide to re-up, you will regain access to your previously claimed games, as well as retain your progress for those games. “Additionally, if you decide to buy one of your previously claimed Stadia Pro games a la carte in the Stadia store, you will regain access to all of your saved data and progress,” reads the post. In other words, your saved progress is safe and you will be able to reclaim the free games offered through the service....

Steam’s localised, government-approved version for the Chinese market, is finally nearing launch. The China-only version kicks off its open beta on February 9 with the help of Dota 2, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. The Chinese version of Steam is operated by publisher Perfect World, and it’s the result of years of work and a partnership that began three years ago. When Steam China goes live, Chinese players will need to sign up for an account if they want to continue playing Dota 2 and CS:GO....

What I don’t love is how long I spend tinkering in menus in an attempt to improve the little number I have in the top left corner of the screen. The FPS counter on Steam Deck is taking over my gaming life. I hate myself for ever letting those evil digits into my house, but there’s seemingly no going back now. Up the stairs there’s a whole bunch of new rooms and paintings - which means new courses. Snowman’s Land is actually hidden. The latest acquisition to Tencent’s ever-expanding gaming empire will be British studio, Sumo Digital. As per Reuters, shareholders of the Sheffield-based company, Sumo Digital, will get 513 pence in cash per share – and that’s an impressive 43% premium to the last price. Unsurprisingly, reports suggest Sumo shareholders are eager for the deal to go ahead. Tencent will be gaining control of Sumo itself, and the multiple studios it controls....

Like a chair or a sandwich, Cyberpunk can be hard to definitively define, but you know it when you see it. Common tropes like smog-choked, corporatized dystopian cities, flying cars, extreme wealth disparity, emergent AI and cybernetic body implants and prosthetics all fuse to get to the “high tech, low life” shorthand that’s come to sum up Cyberpunk fiction - as has biting social commentary that shows how these worlds aren’t so different from our own....
