During its E3 2021 presentation, Devolver Digital’s made a big deal of offering up its Max Pass Plus presentation as an NFT – but that’s “non-fuckwithable tape,” not one of those hateful non-fungible tokens. “The lone physical copy of the 2021 Devolver MaxPass+ presentation gently recorded on a VHS tape with the tab violently torn out of it so your little brother or sister can’t record over it. Before this, it was used to record pornography,” Devolver explained in the item’s listing on its merch store (thanks, Stevivor). The item was listed for $1000, which isn’t really that bad in a world where people have been selling PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles for just as much on auction sites. The tape is basically a one-time-only deal with the presentation recorded onto it – Devovler used the idea of it to skewer the rise in NFT transactions that have taken off across multiple industries lately, and the publisher took a few potshots at corporate greed in the process. Take a look at the full presentation below. At least all the money earned from the sale goes to a good cause. “All proceeds from the sale of this tape will be donated to the Scratch Foundation,” the publisher has confirmed. “Scratch Foundation is a free, online coding community where kids around the world can create their own interactive stories, games, and animations. We support this amazing resource for kids, and hope to one day exploit their hard work, talent, and creativity for our own profit.” That’s nice. Other companies should take note.
